Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award 2019

The Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award is a biennial acquisitive award & exhibition celebrating the diversity and strength of Australia’s textile artistry.

The Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award 2019 CALL FOR ENTRIES is now open.

Entries close 5PM EST Friday 1 March 2019.

The sixth biennial WCTA will be held in 2019. Each incarnation sees professional Australian artists working in any style of textile media invited to submit an entry for consideration within a competitive selection process. A judging panel consisting of the Wangaratta Art Gallery Director and two respected professionals then selects a shortlist of finalists for the Award exhibition at the Gallery over the winter months.
The value of the Award in 2019 will be $10,000 including GST. and includes the permanent acquisition of the winning work to the Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection.
Wangaratta has a long and prominent history of textiles, both in manufacturing and as a craft form. Wangaratta Art Gallery builds upon this unique tradition through the presentation of this outstanding award which is guaranteed to appeal to everyone, local and regional residents and visitors alike.
In addition to the main award exhibition in Gallery1, concurrent textile exhibitions are held in Gallery2 and in the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre Foyer Gallery. The WCTA also coincides with the biennial Wangaratta Stitched Up Textile Festival.
This program is developed to enrich textiles in Wangaratta and across Australia, it will assist in ensuring that contemporary Australian textile art is highly valued and supported now and into the future.

Monique Van Nieuwland is an artist/weaver/designer and an accredited professional member (APM) of CraftACT. She teaches weaving at tertiary and at community interest level. Her studio is filled with many types of loom: back strap, inkle band, countermarch treadle, computer dobby and a state-of-the-art computer operated Jacquard loom.
Monique weaves to create conceptual work for exhibition but also loves the challenge of answering commission briefs and creating practical items. Her conceptual work focuses on the environment and our human existence within it.
A variety of looms will be set up to demonstrate different weaving projects and people can try their hand at weaving on a band loom. There will also be exhibition work on show, a display of design processes and also scarves and small woven homeware items for sale.

Concept for follow up work relating to the Trees exhibition
Skin
I propose to submit a Jacquard weaving of tree bark structure next to wrinkled skin
structure.
Skins protect, grow old and show age, something we have in common with trees.
