"In some of our culture back in Papua New Guinea, we girls start training how to make bilum as young as 8 to 9 years.  We have different styles of making bilums. I started making bilum when I was 9 years old.  These two regions in Papua New Guinea are popular in making bilum.  They are Highlands and Momase regions.  I will bring along different types of bilums to display during the workshop.  It is our culture that, we must know how to make bilums.

We used bilums to puy babies in and carry them, to put garden food in, for marketing and shopping and more.  Ladies cannot walk around without a bilum back in our village."  Balba Simbiken
